NQCG advises Norwegian Government in implementing national nanotechnology strategy
The Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry is implementing a cross-Ministry strategy for nanotechnology.
NQCG advises the Norwegian Government in areas of standardisation and the pressing need for better classification of what nanomaterials are, their functionality, uncertainties and possible implications for human health and the environment. Better classifications and standards for nanomaterials can reduce uncertainties and foster safer conditions for occupational work and the environment. Effective mechanisms and possible implications are seldom documented. Nanoparticle migration in natural systems and their biological degradability are highly uncertain. The current level of knowledge is inadequate for risk assessment. Better classifications and standards is a prerequisite for information exchange and open access to scientific data, and needed for better control and regulation of nanotechnology, while leading to significantly better basis for the preparation of strategies and the introduction of restrictions in the interdisciplinary fields of nanotechnology research.
Nanoscience and nanotechnology are two important fields of future technologies, comprising mainly the disciplines of physics, chemistry and biology, in which high levels of heterogeneity exist. Progress in the nano fields is critically dependent on close collaboration between these disciplines. However, there is still no standard vocabulary of terms in place to report innovation and creative production. A common vocabulary of terms is fundamental not only to strengthen the interdisciplinary research frontier, but also in general as the basis for the development of other emerging technologies. Important proactive actions must be taken, especially those pertaining to open access to scientific data.
