IEC/TC 113 resolve to explore Ontology Engineering for Nanoelectronics and Nanophotonics
NQCG support collaborative development of international standard terminologies for nanoelectronics and nanophotonics.
International Electrotechnical Commission Technical Committee 113 Nanotechnology has resolved to explore how advanced ontology learning techniqes can be used in developing and maintaining complex terminology standards for nanoscale electrotechnical products and systems, and nanoscale photonics components and systems.
IEC and ISO is publishing the Technical Specification 80004 Nanotechnology – Vocabulary. This is a multipart standard on nanotechnology terminology and nomenclature systems. All aspects of the 80004 vocabulary series will be taken into consideration and draft OWL 2 ontologies will be developed for the subdomain electrotechnical products and systems, and for the subdomain photonic components and systems:
- IEC/ISO/TS 80004-9: Nanotechnologies - Vocabulary - Part 9: Electrotechnical products and systems
- IEC/ISO/TS 80004-10: Nanotechnologies - Vocabulary - Part 10: Photonics components and systems
Optical funnel of silver nanowires localizes light on the 100 nm scale
The image is from a simulation of a light pulse interacting with a silver nanoparticle array and was generated by Dr. Stephen Gray, who was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Basic Energy Sciences, Division of Chemical Sciences, Geosciences and Biosciences. Details of the simulations (although not this specific image) may also be found in S. K. Gray and T. Kupka, Physical Review B 68, 045415 (2003). Photo courtesy Argonne National Laboratory.
